Christian Marolf is recognized as the first white settler to build a home in the area that would later become Wilton, Iowa, shortly after Iowa achieved statehood in 1846. Marolf arrived in July of 1849 and built a small log home near what is now the German Lutheran church. At the time, the area was largely undeveloped countryside, and the only nearby home visible from Marolf’s property belonged to Mr. Stearns, located west of town along the south side of the Moscow Road.
Settlement soon followed. In 1850, Ben Maurer arrived and settled on land that now makes up what is known as North Wilton. A year later, in 1851, Peter Marolf established property that would later become known as Marolf’s Addition. These early settlers helped lay the foundation for what would grow into the thriving community of Wilton.
Wilton also has a notable educational history. From 1894 to 1905, the town was home to the Wilton German English College, an institution that served students from the region and reflected the strong German heritage of many early settlers. After the college closed, the campus was eventually converted into what is now City Park. Several of the original college buildings still remain, serving as lasting reminders of Wilton’s early commitment to education and community development.
